Terracotta Warriors, Xian, China

This was one of the highlights of our trip so far.

The famous Army of Terracotta Warriors that were found in 1974 by peasants digging a well. They are shown in their original formation to stand guard over the soul of China’s first unifier emperor over 2000 years ago. The emperor, Qin Shi Huang was terrified of the vanquished spirits awaiting him in the afterlife, or, he expected his rule to continue in death as it had in life. The warriors are housed in a building the size of an aircraft carrier and contains 6000 warriors and horses ready for battle. There are archers both crossbow and longbow followed by the main force of soldiers who were spearmen, swordsmen and used daggers and axes.

Reconstructed warriors that are larger than life size.

The original wood roof had collapsed on the “army” and the warriors have been painstakingly put back together piece by piece.

Archeologists work every day to uncover and restore.

Warriors that have been put together and are still missing pieces.

Each warrior had a unique face created by the artist.

Rhonda researched Xi’an and found this most unusual apartment. The landlord, Clarence, was an expert on the history of the Terracotta Warriors and decorated his rentals with actual sized terracotta figures buried in the wall, so it was like living in a museum.

Clarence and his wife treated us royally.
